Why Earning College Credits Early Is a Smart Move

Many students and parents don't realize the value of earning units before officially starting college. Not only can this save thousands of dollars in tuition, but it can also significantly shorten the time it takes to earn a degree. With many students wasting summers or waiting until college to take mandatory General Education (GE) classes, there's a smarter alternative. By completing credits through AP exams, CLEP, or community college courses while still in high school, students can graduate faster and with less debt. It's important to note that while grades from these early credits don't transfer to your 4-year university GPA, they still count toward your degree — and that's a major win.

The Financial Truth: College Costs Too Much — But There's a Solution

The average bachelor's degree from a UC or CSU takes more than four years and can cost over $60,000. That's a heavy burden — but planning ahead can change everything. For example, completing just one semester of GE units before college can save students between $3,800 and $8,000, depending on the university. Compared to the cost of a semester, the price of earning early credits is minimal: around $90 for an AP/CLEP exam or $138 for a community college course. Students can complete an entire semester of units for as little as $450–690. And with the right guidance, those costs can often be reduced even further.

Blueprint Your Degree with the CreditPath System

We make it easy to create a customized path to your degree. Through a short survey in our Guide Builder tab, students receive tailored suggestions based on their academic background and goals. From there, they can explore valuable exams or courses and add them to their CreditPath spreadsheet. Not all credits are created equal — some fulfill elective units, while others count toward essential GE or even major requirements. Our Blueprint system highlights the most strategic credits, ensuring students focus their time and money where it matters most.

Take Control — Don't Wait for Counselors to Do It For You

While school counselors and administrators are helpful, they're often stretched thin and focused mainly on high school graduation. Planning your college credit strategy requires more specialized attention. That's where we come in. Our platform is designed to help students take ownership of their education journey — especially in California, where UC and CSU schools have some of the clearest and most standardized transfer policies in the country. Whether you're set on a major or still exploring, the right combination of community college courses, AP/CLEP exams, and planning tools can set you up for success — faster and cheaper than the traditional route.
